finding wifi in different cities

It's a little more difficult than I thought it would be but I have found some interesting places that offer free or unlocked wifi services.

I've been traveling from west coast to east and am now heading back to the west. Would like to connect with others to learn better ways of finding free wifi. Right now I just sort of (for lack of a better word) wardrive around until I find a 60% or igher unlocked wifi service.

your thoughts?

I was told this is not illegal - true?

PDA or ultra light computer?

I am hitching around the world and trying to determine which will work better for me as an ultra lightweight device that will allow me to access internet at wifi hotspots and also to do some work on my book during my travels.

i don't plan to activate a phone and am not sure if the PDAs that come with wifi can be used if they are not activated as phones. does anyone know for sure if you can use a PDA for wifi without activating the phone? i guess if you can't, the answer is clearly to get a lightweight computer.

the lightweight computers tend to be at least a pound heavier than the PDAs, even excluding an external keyboard for a PDA. So i'm hoping a PDA will will be useful.

Also, any advice on which lightweight computers and/or PDAs are best for my needs?

Gateway E-4200, can it go wifi?

Hi all,

I have a buddy with a predicament - she has an old Gateway E-4200, reconditioned...it's a PIII, 500 MHz, 128 RAM - loaded with Windows 2000 (she's been told XP would be too much for this computer) It's currently Dial-up only.

Anyone know if there's a way to make this puppy go wifi? She's moving to a place where that's the only connection she'll be able to get.

Any info at all will be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!
WiFi range extenders?

I see lots of products on the market that extend WiFi range from the base unit, but I need the opposite.

I live near enough to *someone's* WiFi signal to get access on a nice clear, quiet night - in my kitchen.
Is there anything out there that will help me pick up a signal better?
I don't mind HOW it works (inside laptop, sticks on outside, or stationary object) as long as it WORKS.

I have an internal b/g laptop card, if that makes a difference.

I need some info, please take into account I am NOT computer literate. I wish to connect to free Wi-Fi from my desktop computer running XP.

What do I need to buy? things perhaps like a wireless G USB network adapter or a router? This setup will be needed only on one desktop. Plus might need an antenna booster.

How do I protect from viruses and other nasty stuff from entering my computer. There are many free sites in and around where I live in Twin Peaks area. I've heard about 'SF-LAN' but need to know how to access them after I have the hardware installed. Thanks --- Duke

WiFi and health

What is this wi fi anyway, I mean what
type(frequency) of signals are used in wi-fi? Radio?

The reason that I ask, is because i wonder if
completely saturating a city in wi-fi poses any
adverse health risks.

I worry about his after reading an article about
some researcher creating a "god helmet"

The article,
http://www.geocities.com/satanicus_2/GodHelmet.html
describes a helmet that uses electromagnetic signals
to stimulate an emotional response in it's wearer.

When queried as to why he does this research, one of his answers
was, "We're living more and more in a complex electromagnetic environment where the experiences of the effects may not be obvious."

So i wonder how much the wifi revolution will change
the amount of EM waves i'm exposed to and whether
it actually makes a difference.

Any facts, ideas or theories?

Well, if wi-fi really does start to mess with
our brains and cause all of us to be emotionally
unstable, then at least we'll all be able to connect
to tribe and talk about it from the comfort of our own
couches, car seat, coffee shop, etc. :-)

Where do you purchase antennas?

And, do you even have to purchase them?

I tend to loose small antennas alot, and I've been buying them on ebay
or the like but I have an idea that there should be some type of electronics
store that would have some equipment. Maybe a radio or ham store?

On a side note, I currently have the scissors from a pseudo-swiss army knife broken off, and clamped to the lead on the sp-rmc connector of my lucent card ..
then its touching the rest of the knife .. that gives it a bit of a gain ...

FREE year of SPOT watch service...

FREE year of SPOT watch service...

My good friend who works on the SPOT watch team at Microsoft just told me to post this on Tribe...

She is giving away FREE 1-year subscriptions to the Microsoft SPOT watch subscription service (a $40 value). If you are not familiar with SPOT watch, please see -- http://www.msndirect.com

These watches make great holiday gifts. You cannot get this same free year of service anywhere else -- you have to do this through someone working on this product at Microsoft. So, if you privately send me your address, my friend will mail you a card that will include a promotional code for receiving the free service. You may hand this card to anyone, and they may in turn give the service as a gift to ANYONE (who owns a SPOT watch or who will buy a SPOT watch).

Buying the watch is a separate transaction. I recommend the nice-looking Abacus Smart Watch, which is what I use. It runs about US$129. This promotion is for US-based individuals only, since the service is not available outside the US.

The SPOT watch is seriously cool. Check it out. I personally make no profits on any of your transactions. Since this a relatively new gadget, the SPOT team just wants you to know about this and to help you (or your family or friends) dive in with this free promotion, if you're interested.
----

Learn more at http://www.msndirect.com

Channels on my watch?
The information you receive on your watch is organized by channel. Similar to the channels on your television set, you see different types of information—such as news, sports, movie show times in your area, stock quotes, weather—when you switch channels on your watch. You can customize the information that you see for each channel.

Hi,
I have just got my first laptop and would like to know any recomendations on how to sync up my outlook data between this and my desktop. I have seen plenty of products all saying they do it but I would like to know any thumbs up or thumbs down for specific products.

I would have thought that MS would have a free tool for syncing the machines PST files but I can't find one.

Any ideas?

WiFi Hardware Buy & Sell & Barter

i might as well start a new category, which i'm sure will prove useful over time for others.

i have a huge, hi-gain, semi-parabolic Wi-Fi antenna, which i bought last year from a broadcaster's industry supplier in England for hefty bucks + freight, but never used.

It is some giant amount of gain, i believe it is 17 decibels (don't have it here). It's heavy duty wire mesh construction, rectangular, in about 1-1/2 foot or perhaps Closer to 2 goot size, as i recall. It has heavy duty mast clamp hardware, and a short, thick, low-loss, coaxial cable with large-ish (about 1/2" or so?) diameter threaded connector. Adapters can be found to convert yo smaller sizes. (See O'Reilly's excellent, detailed book on setting up communuty wireless networks!)

I paid something outrageous like $50 or so for shipping (was all hot on the idea of having nice, strong signal, long-distance wi-fi from outlying places remote to access points), so total was something like $178 or somethingnin there. Moving, consolidating things i mean to but don't actually use. Make me an offer on this; will settle for about half what i paid. Great for a community wireless network geek who wants something mondo-serious. If in an outlying area, pointed at a specific signal, used as a link, the narrow, focused signal propogation of this directional antenna could disregard spurious, distracting 'noise' signals, and give/receive a Ve y directed signal link.

Due to being semi-parabolic, its narrowly focused signal should also cause much less interference to non-target receivers than a cheaper, plain old global, omnidirectional antenna, thus much more likely keeping you in compliance with FCFC Part 15 rules of not causing undesired interference to anyone else.

(Of course, up to you to responsibly test this by going with mobile receivers to non-target areas and be sure you fine tune its direction, angle, input power, etc. to be sure you achieve the best mix of achieving your remote link, plus remaining within non-interference compliance.)

Let me know if interested. This is in San Francisco. Want to sell locally, not deal with, hassle, packing, transporting, risks and expenses of shipping.

Will also trade for any of following:

An iPod (older model is fine).

A semi-decent digital camera.

A large memory card (512 Meg CF, or possibly 256 Meg working SD/MMC).

A very large capacity (512M) USB pen-drive.

A smaller capacity (128M?) combo WiFi + memory CF card.

Thanks.

Wardriving and the Powerbook G4

Hello all....

My girlfriend and I have to travel for work rather extensively, and sometimes we're only in a given location a few weeks - makes getting dsl/cable rather unwieldy. I've taken to wardriving a bit with my G4 Powerbook, and have had some reasonable luck (using Kismac and MacStumbler). Checking email and mapquest from behind a gas station in Reno is pretty groovy....

Problem is, we're currently in a place with limited signal strength to a couple of open (non wep/non wap) networks. How can I improve this? Is there a way to easily add an external antenna to the G4? Or am I stuck going after an aironet card and adding an antenna to that?

I've also got an Airport Extreme with antenna port - anybody know if I can run Kismac through the Airport so I can get some gain off an external antenna?

Thanks for the help - you can see, I'm a relative newbie to this...but it's cool!
Jason

I'm the kind of person who likes the idea of the free internet-where internet access is equally accessible and available for people who want it, so I'm really warm to the idea of wardriving. I've been doing it for a while, but I'm actually just now setting up my own wireless network-I'd been up to this point too busy using other people's open networks. :)

Anyways, does anyone have ideas on how to set up an open network that still maintains some level of security for the computers inside it or for the network as a whole? Is this even possible or just a pipe dream?

advice on getting started

I'm just now at the point of buying a wireless network adapter for my laptop, but I have a few questions. I was hoping some more experienced users would share some advice.

I'm only interested in switching to wireless (curently use dial-up with a 56k modum card) so that I can use the web at a couple of local coffee shops or other similar places on the road, mostly for the sake if convenience and saving the cost of my dial-up service. Speed is not that important to me (did I mention I still use dial-up?), and weight is not a big deal since my laptop is petty bulky aready. What I do care about is 1) price, 2) compatibility with Windows 98 (not 98SE), and 3) range on the road.

My laptop is so old that it's a member of AARP. It is running Windows 98, and I have read that many of the wireless network adapters do not work well (or at all) with Windows 98 (some are okay with 98SE). Since I am trying to squeeze another year or two of use out of my laptop, and since I am tring to put as little money into it as possible before getting a new one, I have no interest whatsoever in "upgrading" to a more recent
edition of Windows (especially since I'll probably be switching to Mac or Linux for the next machine). I don't
want the hassle & dont want the expense. My question is, does anyone know of a wireless network adapter that works tolerably well with Windows 98? If the box says it's okay with 98SE, could I expect it to work with 98 too?

My other big question is about the choice between an insertable card or an external USB adapter. The card is, of course, small and convenient. However, I've read that some of them have a problem with limitted range. Since I'm always going to be using it away from home, that seems like a problem. On the other hand, the USB adapter is bulkier, but has much better range (or so I've read). I think they also tend to be just a little less expensive, which would be nice, and they can be used with a PC as well as a laptop, which could come in handy in the future if I network my desktops. Does all of this sound accurate? Does anyone have experience with the two different types of devices?

Finally, I am wondering if it would be better to get the "b" or "g" type adapter. I've read that "b" is on the way out, but will still be common enough for a couple more years. That's the time frame I'm looking at for use of this network adapter, and I'm leaning towards the less expensive "b" type. Will I be able to log on at most places using that type? Am I wrong in the impression that type "b" & "g" are compatible? Finally, if I invest in equipment for a home network in the future, would my "b" type work with "g" everything else?

So in summary, I'm thinking of getting an 802.11b wireless external USB network adapter. Can I find one to work with Windows 98? Will I regret the bulk of the external USB vs internal card? And will the adapter work well for me for the next couple of years until I change systems & until the standards change?

Finally, any specific recomendations? Linksys? D-link? What?

Thanks (a lot) in advance,

Gustavo

Incredibly awesome show I can't believe I am watching this on winamp tv... totally informative too.

I need it ASAP because me and my friend are planning to war drive on are drive back to the West Coast from Florida...lol

SSid's like "Ranch" etc.

A couple even had town-wide WISPs, one of which was assigning real world IPs!!!

Were thinking with a decent directional we can go camping at Perdinales Fall state park near Henly Texas and make a novel geek outing out of it. ;)

If driving around and mapping/accessing WiFi nets is wardriving (in tribute to dial-up "wardialing" as featured in the movie WarGames and earlier), then walking/biking to cafes and restaurants and checking for connectivity must be: warmunching!

I've actually been getting paid to do warmunching in the past couple of weeks, taking photos and wriiting/editing descriptions of amenities and signal coverage for a new directory that's due to go online this week. Stay tuned!

Greetings all, and welcome to the WiBo tribo! (Sorry, sorry. Dumb I know, but I couldn't resist.)

I'd like to kick things off by soliciting you all to share your favorite WiBo'ing experience. You know the kind: that revelatory experience when mobile WiFi just _worked_ for you, coming through in a surprising, timely or exciting way, and in a way that no other technology really could have.

For me, such moments are increasingly common, and each one reinforces the sense of futuristic wonder I had when I had my first WiBo epiphany.

"This really works!"

"Wow, that was easy!"

"I can't believe I'm checking my email on this totally non-descript random streetcorner."

"I so needed internet access at this moment and place, and - lo and behold! - here it is!"
